Should Special Education Students Mix With Mainstream Classes?

When we make decisions about the way schools are run, we are of course trying to create the best possible environment for the students who will be spending their time in those schools. These kinds of choices have a huge impact on hundreds of thousands of kids, and on the way they are able to learn and grow. Naturally, getting these decisions right is a huge deal, and should be the utmost priority of the faculty and administrative personnel at any school. Additionally, when creating or changing policies that relate to special education, it is perhaps even more important to make an informed decision because the students involved are often facing enough challenges as it is.

So that means it is particularly vital to address the question of whether or not special ed students should be able to mix in mainstream classes. This is a controversial question with a lot of good points on both sides, and it is key to remember that although we may disagree with each other on some points, as long as everyone involved can keep the welfare of all kids involved at the forefront of their minds, and as long as we are open and honest with ourselves and each other about the ramifications of the different choices, we can come up with a positive solution to the problem that will benefit everyone involved as much as possible.

On the one side of the question, there are people who think that special education students should be mixed with mainstream students. There are a lot of reasons to think this might be a good idea. It could give the special ed students the opportunity to be exposed to and to learn from a slightly more challenging curriculum. After all, if they never get a chance to try to learn something a little harder, how will anyone know whether or not they can handle it? Mixing classrooms can also be very beneficial from a social perspective, because it would give two groups of students who are usually separated the chance to spend time around each other. The mainstream students could get a chance to spend some time around special education students and become more familiar and comfortable with them, while the special education students could benefit from spending time around mainstream kids in a way that would better prepare them for the real world.

Essential Education Skills for All Students – Student or Honeybee?

Have you ever taken a moment to watch a honeybee in action? Did you marvel at the way she methodically drifts from flower to flower collecting her “basketfuls” of pollen, only to navigate unerringly back to the hive? Did you ever wonder where she learned to do her job so well and to navigate so precisely? The answer lies with Mother Nature, herself. Honeybees are born with all of the necessary skills to do their specific jobs in a precise, prescribed manner. Honeybees never need to be trained; they go right to work the moment they are born. This remarkable system works beautifully, indeed… for honeybees! The downside of this “hardwired” arrangement, however, is that each honeybee is capable of performing only a limited number of specific tasks. She neither ponders nor analyzes her situation; she simply responds to cues from her environment and her genetic programming.

Fortunately for us, Mother Nature has neglected to outfit human beings with such a predisposed pattern of behavior. I say “fortunately,” because humans possess the genetic freedom to be creative, innovative, and adaptive. As a result, our children are blessed with the ability learn many different skills, but these skills must be taught (and reinforced) if students are to process information in an efficient manner. Never forget, however, that human beings are capable of assimilating inefficient processing and organizational behaviors just as easily as they can efficient ones!

To understand the importance of proper training, let’s consider an employment scenario for just a moment. Anyone who has worked for a living is certainly familiar with the phrase “job description.” This phrase refers, of course, to the specific duties that a particular job entails. Naturally, if an employee is unaware of these duties or lacks the skills necessary to carry them out, his or her employment is in serious peril. Furthermore, if an employee has not been properly trained, an employer would be unreasonable to expect exceptional job-performance.

Special Education Lesson Plans

Special education lesson plans are specially designed teaching methods or educational techniques for students of all age groups, with mild to profound disabilities. The lesson plans would vary depending upon the child’s nature, age, and the extremeness and type of disability. These lesson plans are mainly meant to promote student engagements, to prepare students to function independently and to master skills, to build and support social competence, and to help children and their families lead a problem free life. Special education lesson plans include math, science, music, language and art lessons, computers and the Internet, social studies, physical education and health, and other multi-disciplinary lessons.

Special educators should design presentations to cater to different levels of individual disability. Music, dance, and other art forms are great aids to enhance learning in students with disabilities. Reading, writing, and public speaking can be encouraged by special educators. Well thought out lesson plans will enhance the child’s reasoning ability and reading skills, feelings and response, create a sense of personal fulfillment, encourage language development, promote communication, help to achieve motor control and physical wellness, and cultivate positive attitudes towards the school.

The response of disabled students towards the curriculum depends on the nature of the disability, i.e., physical, emotional or cognitive. A good teacher can encourage each student to participate in the learning experience not only with the assistance of well-adapted materials, but also with proper instructional methods which would be practicable in a disabled individual.

All students in special education are required by law to have a complete evaluation every three years to determine eligibility for special education services. The following case study is about a student named “Adam”. Adam is seven years old and has autism. He is in a Special Day Class setting in a public school. The case study includes details of Adam’s three-year educational evaluation.

When the assessment plan was presented to the parents, they requested additional assessments including a functional analysis, occupational therapy and an assistive technology assessment. A copy of the signed assessment plan was given to the appropriate specialists: psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, speech therapist, nurse and special education teacher.

The school psychologist observed Adam on several occasions before administering the psycho-educational profile revised (PEP-R). The PEP-R covers a variety of developmental areas. The test items are presented with simple, concrete instructions and most of the expected responses are nonverbal. The PEP-R provides information on developmental functioning in imitation, perception, fine motor, gross motor, eye-hand integration, cognitive performance and cognitive verbal areas. The PEP-R consists of a set of toys and learning materials that were presented to Adam within structured play activities. The psychologist recorded Adam’s responses to the test. His scores were then distributed among seven developmental and four behavioral areas.
